چکیده

The equation of continuity is used to estimate profiles of vertical velocity between 25 and 120 m from moored current measurements in arrays nested within the triangle with vertices located at 1ø30'S, 140øW and along the equator at 140 ø and 110øW during December 1983 through March 1984 and May-September 1984. All directions of the 4to 5-month mean values were upward. The ensemble averaged mean vertical velocity was 2.2 x 10 -5 m s -•. Upwelling speeds decreased eastward.

Inferring upwelling rates in the equatorial Atlantic using Be measurements in the upper ocean

Ocean upwelling rates are difficult to measure because of the relatively small velocities involved, and therefore are typically inferred from indirect methods such as heat budget estimates or tracer observations. Here we present the first results using a novel technique, based on the isotope Be, to infer rates of upwelling along the equator. Beryllium-7 (half-life1⁄453.3 d) is a cosmic-ray prod...

Estimating iron and aluminum removal rates in the eastern equatorial Pacific Ocean using a box model approach

Iron limitation plays an important role in maintaining the high-nitrate low-chlorophyll (HNLC) condition in the equatorial upwelling zone. The rate and depth of upwelling control Fe supply to the euphotic zone. This study constrains the transport fluxes and budget of two trace metals, Fe and Al, in the upper ocean. They are co-delivered to the eastern equatorial Pacific surface waters via the E...

Equatorial upwelling enhances nitrogen fixation in the Atlantic Ocean

[1] Surface waters in upwelling regions are thought to be nutrient rich and hence inhibit nitrogen fixation (diazotrophy) because diazotrophs can preferentially assimilate nitrate and ammonia instead of expending energy to fix dinitrogen. We found average nitrogen fixation rates to be two to seven times higher in the surface waters of the upwelling region of the eastern equatorial Atlantic than...

Association of whale sharks (Rhincodon typus) with thermo-biological frontal systems of the eastern tropical Pacific

Satellite tracking of 27 whale sharks in the eastern tropical Pacific, examined in relation to environmental data, indicates preferential occupancy of thermo-biological frontal systems. In these systems, thermal gradients are caused by wind-forced circulation and mixing, and biological gradients are caused by associated nutrient enrichment and enhanced primary productivity. Two of the frontal s...

Tropical Atlantic variability in a coupled physical–biogeochemical ocean model

A three-dimensional ocean biogeochemical model of the tropical Atlantic Ocean was run for more than half a century (1949–2000) in order to characterize the ocean biogeochemical response to variable forcing over this period. The seasonal cycle in the equatorial upwelling zone agrees reasonably well with observations and other published simulations but underestimates phytoplankton biomass under s...
